2004 Season - Awards Ceremony
2004 DHS Players Reap Benefits of Hard Work Six DHS seniors received coveted “4-year helmet” awards earlier this month signifying the end of their high school football careers and 13 others in the Class of 2005. The past season was highlighted by a 5-game winning streak that provided a Home Coming win for DHS and spoiled Home Coming for three opponents, including Vanden. The Rams finished the season third in the CVC with an overall 6-4 (4-2) record. Four years of hard work paid off for All-CVC players Ryan Hedberg, Brendon Winslow, Aaron Garcia and Honorable Mention (HM) CVC players Anthony Abraham, Armand Bauduin, Doug Sturgeon. Seniors Corey Schmidt, Cody Hodge and Adam Holloway, junior Ryan Harvey, and sophomore Cameron Nagle also received All-CVC or HM-CVC recognition. Hedberg and Schmidt were voted CVC Back of the Year and CVC Lineman of the Year. Both were also selected as HM All-Metro players by the Sacramento Bee. Garcia’s recognition as a CVC All-Academic player is a tribute to all student-athletes at DHS. College Hall of Fame recognized Holloway (Bay Area Chapter) and Schmidt (Sacramento Area Chapter) as honorable mention players. Hedberg, Holloway, Schmidt and Winslow were named to the All-Northern Solano County team. Jim Sochor, legendary UC Davis head football coach and member of the Cal Aggie Athletic Hall of Fame, served as guest speaker. His 18 straight league championships is a record that may stand forever. Coach Sochor emphasized players’ trust in each other and the importance of establishing a winning season. He has also been a mentor throughout the season for Rams first-year Head Coach Scott Winslow. Assistant Head Coach Elijah Hall, holder of the longest interception return in UCD history, had the privilege of playing for Coach Sochor. Coach Sochor’s philosophies and work ethic were a vital contribution to this season’s success. Players, coaches, family members and sponsors were treated to an unlimited supply of banana splits during CD presentations of the season’s highlights. The deserts were greatly appreciated and special thanks go to the Quarterback Club, its president Ken Holloway, all the family members who helped, and the Senior Center for hosting the event. Head Coach Scott Winslow shared thoughts on his first season and provided direction for the future of the program. His emphasis is “Team Concept” and working together to obtain that goal. Each season begins with off-season conditioning; quickly followed by Spring Football, Summer Camp, and Passing Leagues. Spring Football starts in late May, breaks for Finals’ Week, and continues in early June to allow incoming freshman a chance to participate. Most of last year’s team was able to attend a 3-day camp in June at UCal Berkeley. By the end of the camp, the Dixon Rams had impressed many of the coaches and the team started to grow as a unit. Summer passing leagues provided valuable experience for the defensive secondary and improved passing/receiving skills. Coach Winslow highly encourages multi-sport athletes and initiated a positive rapport amongst DHS coaches. For example, at least three football-basketball players can be seen on the court at any given time. Wrestling Head Coach Bob Stone works closely with football coaches to combine off-season conditioning programs producing the best athletes possible for both sports. Baseball and track also compliment the multi-sport concept. This year’s standout kicker, sophomore Oscar Navarro, exemplifies how teams can help each other. Athletics was not the only topic for Coach Winslow as he reminded each of the players they are student-athletes. He also spoke about many of the myths involving college recruiting and important steps student-athletes should take to better prepare themselves for the future. A new scholarship award, presented on behalf of former DHS Football Coach Ira "Red" Finney, will be presented at the annual Quarterback Club golf tournament. Parents attending the awards ceremony were quick to note the positive attitude surrounding this year’s team and excellent job the coaching staff has done. Mark and Debbie Abraham, as well as many other families, donated a significant amount of their time this season to help the team in anyway needed and feel their efforts were well worth every second. Cliff and Kathy Hedberg were very pleased by the positive turn-around this year both on and off the field. Homecoming King Armand Bauduin was selected as the team’s Most Inspirational Player. His leadership on the field and in the weight room also earned Armand a share of the Ram’s Team Leadership Award with Ryan Hedberg. According to Bauduin, off-season conditioning was the key to success this season. Standout performer Cody Hodge was extremely pleased to have played after missing a season. Hodge played several positions on offense and defense, never hesitating to do what was best for the team. These qualities earned Cody “Most Versatile Player” honors as well as a share of the Most Coachable Senior Award with Blake Curtis. Offensive line coach Mike Dybdahl reacted like a proud parent when he learned each of his starting linemen (tackle-to-tackle, plus the tight end) received All-CVC or HM CVC honors. It all begins up front and “The Rock” of that line is Doug Sturgeon. He was voted this year’s “Most Consistent Lineman”; which if you ever have been a running back or QB, should be your best friend. Adam Holloway and Corey Schmidt also received Team Outstanding Lineman Awards. Varsity, JV, and Freshman Awards were presented by categories this year rather than by individual units. This provided an atmosphere of “One Team” and highlighted the effects players can have playing at a higher level of competition. Four-year awards, CVC honors, MVP selections, and Team Leadership Awards culminated the ceremony. Additionally, Outstanding Player awards went to Brendon Winslow, Corey Schmidt, and Addison Randall on offense; Adam Holloway, Aaron Garcia, and Ryan Harvey on defense; Anthony Abraham and Thomas Murphy on special teams. Outstanding All-Around Underclassman was presented to sophomore Cameron Nagle. JV Head Coach Ivan Chaidez presented Co-MVP awards to Mike Rowe and Matt Altieri. Rowe also received honors as JV Defensive Player of the Year and was called up to the varsity level for the season finale against Center where he saw plenty of action on the defensive side of the ball. JV Offensive Player of the Year, freshman Jack Green, has the skills to be an impact player for the varsity next year. Sophomores James Garcia and Clinton Motley were JV Offensive and Defensive Backs of the Year while Danny Finlay and Max Dorries were JV Offensive and Defensive Lineman of the Year. For the first time in many years, the Rams were able to field a freshman team. Head Coach Bob Balint took on the difficult task of establishing a new team knowing how important game experience is to the future of Ram football. Freshman Corey Davis was selected Team MVP and Taylor Cross received Best All-Around Player honors. Team Leadership awards went to Ryan Bacon, Andrew Balint, and Mike Pulsipher. Outstanding Player of the Year awards went to Chris Flanagan, Jeremy Knapp, and Aaron McDonald. Offensive Coordinator Skip Mitchell implemented multi-set formations and a well-balanced run/pass attack which kept opponents on their heals and provided plenty of open field excitement. Providing valuable inputs from the press box was his assistant Anthony Andrade. Their selection for Off Coord Award went to junior Kevin Bracken. Defensive Coordinator Elijah Hall developed a secondary scheme that confused opponents and defensive fronts that forced opponents to run outside. His assistant, Mike Gilday provided insight from above that was otherwise unattainable from the sidelines. Their selection for Def Coord Award went to junior Lamar Ford. Special Teams Coordinator Steve Drewnowski provided detailed scouting reports from game film highlighting each opponent’s strengths and vulnerabilities. Ferman Rubio provided extensive assistance to the kickers bringing renewed excitement to Ram fans. Their selection for Special Teams Coord Award went to senior Ryan Hedberg. Most Improved Senior, Junior, JV and Freshman Player Awards went to Anthony Abraham, Tony Villanueva, Cody Jolander, and Logan Talken. Two juniors, Josh Gonzalez and Ryan Harvey, share this year’s Iron Man Award. Both are two of the hardest workers in the weight room and solid performers on the field. Gonzalez also shared Most Coachable Juniors recognition with Addison Randall. Sophomore Jasmine Cardenas was selected the JV’s Most Consistent Player Award and freshman J.J. Burrell was the Frosh Tough Man Award winner. Seniors Zack Eck, Nick Glide, Ian Hull, Jeremy McMoore, Luis Rosales, Silvino Sanchez, Rajpreet Singh and Zach Young were a vital part of this year’s success and were awarded varsity letters along with juniors Thomas Meyers, Tyler Roberts, Brian Rosano, Juan Soto, Zach Tomelloso and sophomore kicking sensation Oscar Navarro. Sophomores Kevin Cardenas, Jeorge Dela Torre, Zack Delgado, Eric Garcia, Kenny Hulse, R.J. Lozano, Mike Mayoral, Zeb Middleton, Vincent Perez, and Randy Webster significantly contributed to the program and will be ready for next season’s challenges at the varsity level. Coaches Award winners freshmen Dean Luedke, Corey Mack, and Juan Ramirez are sure to be future impact players. Freshmen Jerry Contreras, Leonel Contreras, Nick Ferrari, Mike Hamilton, Ryan Morris, Juan Rodriguez, Travis Smith, Ryan Thomason, and Danny Vetting received certificates for this season’s efforts. Although not on the field itself, DHS’s “Stat Girls” Toni Anderson, Kara Besseghini, Nicole Cecchini, Jessica Havlin, Madeline MacKenzie, Tiffany Roberts, and Ashley Sturgeon were on the sidelines each game. Their contributions are greatly appreciated and will grow exponentially next season with newly acquired computer software designed to combine game film and data analysis. Players are already hard at work preparing for next season. One-hour strength and conditioning sessions take place each Monday, Wednesday and Friday at DHS. The annual Spring Lift-A-Thon will provide an opportunity for individuals to compete against each other while raising money for this year’s summer camp.
