DHS Coaches Thank Sponsors Of Golf Tournament and Senior Scholarships
The 3rd Annual Dixon Rams Golf Tournament was held in mid-May at Cypress Lakes Golf Course. Tournament chairman Bill Birdsong and Head Football Coach Scott Winslow were very pleased with the turnout as 110 participants enjoyed a beautiful spring day filled with plenty of sunshine and a refreshing light breeze. Additionally, two trophies were presented that fine afternoon. The Annual Dixon Rams Golf Tournament trophy went to sponsor West Coast Railroad whose team of Rich Bryant, JR Williams, Tom Lister and Troy Ham finished on top with a net score of 61. The Coach Ira “Red” Finney Memorial Scholarship trophy was presented to DHS seniors Ryan Hedberg, Brendon Winslow and Corey Schmidt. This tournament has rapidly become the single largest contributor to the DHS football program.
Coach Winslow and his assistants would like to thank Bill, his staff, and all the sponsors who made the golf tournament such a success. Enormous costs and months of volunteer time are associated with running a successful football program. A significant portion of the budget involves personal protective gear for the players, strength and conditioning equipment, plus increased technological advances. Time donated by volunteers like Bill Birdsong include countless hours organizing the tournament and working with sponsors from the local community. Walking through the downtown area prior to the tournament, you probably even noticed an Astroturf putting green and golfing trophy in his Embroidery Shop’s display case.
As everyone in town knows, Dixon businesses are incredibly supportive when it comes to local fundraisers, charities, and issues that affect our community. American Commercial Electrical Services, Bud’s Pub and Grill, California Pipe Fabricators, Dependable Heating and Air, Dixon Rotary, Dixon Sanitary Services, The Embroidery Shop of Dixon, Longs Drug, Magna Corporation, Mexicana Airlines, Pizza Guys, Ron Dupratt Ford, Round Table Pizza and West Coast Railroad each sponsored a team. Ron Dupratt Ford offered a beautiful new Mustang and Mexicana Airlines offered round trip tickets for two for selected hole-in-one opportunities.
Raffle gifts received from throughout the community were a highlight of the tournament. American Athletic Services, Oakland A’s, Sacramento Kings, Dixon Florist, Djon’s, Glories, Dixon Rotary, Longs Drug, Solano Bakery, Cenarios Pizza, Java California, Carl’s JR, Jelly Belly, Embroidery Shop of Dixon, Brendan Theatres, Davis Muni Golf Course, Rio Vista Golf Course, Mary’s Pizza Shack, Dawson’s, Floozies, and Starbucks were each responsible for ensuring this tournament would set the bar for future events.
Longs Drug sponsored the longest drive and presented winner Steve White a Taylor Made R5 Driver. Closest-To-The-Pin winner Ray Walker received a Titlest Wedge for placing his tee-shot within 9’ 11’ of the hole. Wayne Holland took home a Scotty Cameron putter as winner of the putting contest. There was a tie for second place amongst the team competition with Gary Addison, Chuck Smith, Chuck Cimino and Steve White winning the playoff, while Jeff Potts, Pat Williams, Joe Johnston and Casey Kangas settled for third. Last place finishers Eddie Gomez, Paul Holland, Wayne Holland and Todd Schoeder were also winners as they walked away with ball retrievers that should come in handy next year.
DHS standouts Ryan Hedberg, Brendon Winslow, and Corey Schmidt attended as guests of the tournament sponsors. Each will be furthering their education this fall and had their names engraved on a scholarship trophy permanently displayed at DHS. Acknowledged last fall as All-CVC players, these seniors were selected by the DHS Coaching Staff for their efforts on and off the playing field. Five different seniors received first place votes this year, signifying the respect players earned from their coaches throughout the past year and a well-balanced Rams attack on the field.
There are many costs associated with a successful program and it begins with safety of the players. Each year, all of the football helmets are sent away to comply with stringent safety regulations. Replacement helmets must be purchased for those no longer suitable. Shoulder pads must be repaired annually and new purchases made to keep the supply levels healthy. Hip, thigh, and kneepads are examples of additional equipment evaluated and restocked.
Last year’s team attended a 3-day summer camp at UC Berkeley where individual skills’ improvement and team play were highly emphasized. The experience gained proved invaluable as Dixon Ram Pride took shape long before the season started. Freshman through seniors are eligible to attend this year’s camp scheduled for June 11-13. The cost to players can be greatly offset due to the support of the community through fundraisers like the annual Lift-A-Thon and the Golf Tournament.
Coaching seminars, summer passing leagues, strength/conditioning combines, and quarterback/receiver clinics are further examples of challenges taken on by Coach Winslow, his staff, and dedicated players. Weights especially designed for power cleans and “dot drill” mats were recently purchased to build upon last year’s off-season strength and conditioning program. Hard work proved beneficial for the Rams’ vastly improved offensive line as each position (tackle to tackle and tight end) received All-CVC and/or Honorable Mention recognition. This is a direct result of the players’ dedication during off-season workouts emphasizing lower body strength and plyometrics.
Technological advances are also underway at DHS. Examples include data based spreadsheets allowing coaches and players to concentrate on specific areas of the game such as 3rd and long, goalline, and special teams. Enhanced software aids in breaking down film and scouting for situational tendencies. A new projection system and future end zone camera will augment film review conducted on Saturday mornings and throughout the week. Our future website will provide in-depth analysis of game data, parent/player calendar of events, sponsor information and much more.
Success on the field is directly related to the community’s involvement. It is encouraging to see this level of support from the community and DHS football is off to a great start this season as a result. Parents, DHS students, and sponsors are encouraged to continue this tradition by volunteering time where they can. For a list of activities where you may be able to assist, please contact the President of the Quarterback Club, Leonard Altieri at 678-4933. We look forward to seeing you at our home opener on September 9, 2005 at Winters.
Bill Birdsong, Chairman of the 3rd Annual Dixon Rams Golf Tournament, would like to extend his thanks to everyone involved including all of our sponsors (hopefully we haven’t forgotten anyone), the Football Staff, players, and cheerleaders whose time, dedication and hard work made this tourney a success. Special thanks go to Marjorie, Debbie and Angie, without whom he couldn’t have done it. Congratulations to all of our winners, thank you all so much, and we hope to see everyone back next year.
