FEATURING
DR. HARRY
EDWARDS
PROFESSOR EMERITUS OF SOCIOLOGY
UC BERKELEY
April 3—4, 2009
at the
DoubleTree Hotel
Berkeley, CA
Notable sports sociologist and friend of the
Cal Football program, Dr. Harry Edwards is widely recognized as
the leading authority on issues of race and
sports. The New York Times calls Dr. Edwards "the most
important sports activist of our lifetime.”
After graduating with a degree in sociology from San Jose State, he
received his MA and PHD from Cornell
University. In 1968, Dr. Edwards formed the Olympic Project for
Human Rights, OPHR, whose aim was to protest
racial segregation in the United States and around the world.
Two OPHR members, Tommie Smith and John Carlos,
gold and bronze medalists at the 1968 Summer
Olympics, earned notoriety for their Black
Power salute during the playing of the National Anthem. Dr.
Edwards was one of UC Berkeley's most popular
lecturers during his thirty-one years on campus and was
honored as a Professor Emeritus of Sociology.
Dr. Edwards has served as a staff consultant to the San
Francisco 49ers, Golden State Warriors, NFL,
and Major League Baseball. His programs for handling player
personnel issues were eventually adopted by the
entire NFL.
