Coin Toss

Prior to the beginning of a game and the first overtime, team captains meet with officials at the center of the field.  The visiting team's captain calls "heads" or "tails" prior to the coin toss.  The winner of the coin toss is given the option to receive the kickoff, initiate the kickoff, defend a particular goal, or defer until the beginning of the second half.  By deferring, they are guaranteed first choice at the beginning of the second half.

The team losing the coin toss is given second choice unless the winner defers.

Normally, the team winning the coin toss will opt to receive the kickoff at the beginning of the game or defer to receive the kickoff at the beginning of the second half.  Following the kickoff return, their team will be on offense and have the first opportunity to score.

Occasionally, a team will win the coin toss and elect to kickoff first in hopes of pinning the opponent deep in their own territory or defending a particular goal due to adverse weather conditions.

NOTE:  Their is no coin toss at the beginning of the second half or additional overtimes.  At the beginning of the second half, team captains meet at the center of the field.  The team with the first choice is given the option to receive the kickoff, initiate the kickoff, or defend a particular goal.  Their opponent is given the remaining choice(s).
